3rd Philosophy Graduate Conference at CEU

The conference aims to bring together graduate students from Central-East Europe and the rest of the world who share an interest in analytic philosophy, analytically oriented history of philosophy and continental philosophy. We are delighted to welcome Dr. Stephen Mulhall from Oxford University, who will give the keynote address. We can also offer a limited number of grants to contribute to travel or accommodation.

SENIOR OPENING
One new position (rank: Full Professor), commencing September 2010. The candidates should be analytic philosophers with a distinguished record of articles in leading journals and/or books published by reputable publishers of philosophical research. They should have a currently active, pertinent, and contemporary research agenda and a wide recognition of their work in the literature. The graduate (MA and PhD) programs of the Department are in progress; they will take shape largely in accordance with the AOS and AOC of such senior appointments. At most two courses per semester in small classes. Salary competitive and commensurate with credentials. Rent-free furnished apartment on campus is among the fringe benefits. Candidates should send a CV and a list of references, accompanied by a signed cover letter detailing how they can contribute to the enrichment of academic life in the Department. The Department offers, among others, a couple of large, multi-section, university-wide courses in social and political philosophy in the tradition of “great books” and prospective faculty should be prepared to teach these. Candidates should preferably have an earned PhD at the time of appointment and show evidence of outstanding research potential. Salary competitive and commensurate with credentials. “In Conversation: W.V.O. Quine” e o serie de 7 interviuri (lungi! o oră jumate-două ore fiecare) cu Quine produs de Philosophy International pe la începutul anilor ‘90, după cât se pare (nu găsesc informaţii pe imdb sau wikipedia). Un utilizator de pe youtube a încărcat deja 4 dintre ele (pe lângă multe altele).
- The Fara Interview: Rudolf Fara face un interviu biografic: primii ani de viaţă, studiile de filosofie, călătoriile etc.
- The Goldfarb Panel: Warren Goldfarb (Harvard), Paul Horwich (NYU) şi Martin Davies (Oxford/ANU) discută cu Quine despre relaţia acestuia cu pozitivismul logic şi Rudolf Carnap, despre “Două dogme ale empirismului”, extensionalism, naturalism şi relativitatea ontologiei.
- The Fogelin Panel Robert Fogelin (Dartmouth), Paul Horwich şi Martin Davies discută epistemologia lui Quine — holism, norme epistemice, problema scepticismului şi naturalizarea epistemologiei.
- The Block Panel Ned Block (NYU), Paul Horwich şi Martin Davies discută teme din filosofia minţii şi poziţiile quiniene faţă de acestea — conştiinţă şi qualia, behaviorism vs lingvistică şi psihologie cognitivă, cauzare mentală.

Săptămâna filmului românesc la Budapesta
Román filmhét a început ieri, la Uránia, cu un documentar despre Radio Europa Liberă (notez doar contrastul dintre un Ilie Merce dezgustător, încă parlamentar, şi Monica Lovinescu imobilizată în pat) şi cu o serie de discursuri prea lungi. Unele au fost jalnice, precum cel al doamnei ambasador Comaroschi, altele decente, precum cel al domnului N.C. Munteanu, sau al directoarei ICR, doamna Armanca. Oricum, acest eveniment anual este unul din lucrurile bune pe care le face ICR în Ungaria.

Idolii Forului este un volum dedicat notiunii de intelectual, editat de catre Sorin Adam Matei si Mona Momescu, in curs de aparitie (va aparea luna acesta, dupa toate aparentele). Printre contributori ii gasim pe Vasile Morar, Gabriel Andreescu, Mircea Flonta. Voi avea si eu o contributie, cu titlul “Specializarea: Intelectual. Cazul intelectualilor filosofi din România”.
