DeRose against Myers

with 2 comments

Though maybe my blog colleague, Stefan, won’t agree, I recommend Keith DeRose’s response to PZ Myers’s (zebrafish expert – laugh my ass off) amazingly primitive views on the „cracker case”. Link in the title of this post…

  1. Thanks for the link, István! Prof. DeRose’s response is thoughtful and sensible, given the circumstances. I have mixed opinions about this case; I agree with Prof. DeRose that PZ’s provocation hurts more people than it should, but I disagree that it is „morally more problematic than anything Donohue has yet done in this case”; rather, I can’t tell the grounds for a really balanced comparison between the two. The fact is that PZ was deliberately mean to a lot of decent people this time. Anyway, since you brought this up on Calculemus!, I’ll add the links to other sensible posts on the cracker affair:
    John Wilkins
    Mark Chu-Carroll
    Janet Stemwedel
    and Chad Orzel

As an aside: PZ Myers is a specialist in evo-devo, not zebrafish; zebrafish are important model organisms for this kind of research, just as the equally humble Drosophila (the fruitfly) or Arabidopsis (a small relative of cabbage).

  2. Just found that Sean Carroll posted on Cosmic Variance a nice piece as well. As my late grandma used to say, „Tonul face muzica”.
