3rd Philosophy Graduate Conference at CEU
…will take place between 20-21 March 2010:
The conference aims to bring together graduate students from Central-East Europe and the rest of the world who share an interest in analytic philosophy, analytically oriented history of philosophy and continental philosophy. We are delighted to welcome Dr. Stephen Mulhall from Oxford University, who will give the keynote address. We can also offer a limited number of grants to contribute to travel or accommodation.
The deadline for submissions is December 15, 2009.

Conferință Darwin la Unibuc
Au apărut detaliile pentru Conferința Darwin anunțată de George acum ceva timp:
Facultatea de Biologie şi Facultatea de Filosofie din Universitatea Bucureşti vor organiza în zilele de 20-22 noiembrie 2009 o conferinţă cu tema „Darwin, evoluţia speciilor şi gândirea evoluţionistă”, cu ocazia împlinirii a 150 de ani de la publicarea lucrării „Originea speciilor”.
Conferinţa işi propune să discute însemnătatea epocală a operei lui Darwin pentru ştiinţă precum şi pentru viziunea modernă asupra lumii şi omului. Totodată vor fi discutate principalele contribuţii care au fost aduse în ultimul secol şi jumătate la dezvoltarea ideilor formulate de Darwin şi ecoul acestor idei în disciplinele ştiinţifice înrudite, în disciplinele sociale şi în cercetarea filosofică.
Persoanele care doresc să contribuie cu comunicări la această conferinţă sunt rugate să transmită titlul şi un scurt rezumat al comunicării până în data de 1 iunie 2009. Textul comunicării va trebui trimis sau depus la secretariatul conferinţei până în data de 1 octombrie 2009.
Textele comunicărilor trebuie redactate în aşa fel încât să fie asigurată înţelegerea lor de către un public instruit, fără pregătire filosofică sau ştiinţifică de strictă specialitate. Comunicările acceptate la conferinţă vor fi publicate într-un volum.
Conferinţa se va încheia cu o masă rotundă destinată dezbaterii necesităţii studiului teoriilor darwiniste în învăţământul preuniversitar şi în cel universitar de profil, care va dezbate situaţia actuală a predării evoluţionismului ştiinţific în învăţământul românesc.

Cu întârziere, semnalez și articolul lui Andrei Cornea din 22: „‘Anul Darwin’: ce e de făcut?” (24 feb). O mostră:
„Anul Darwin” ar putea insemna, atunci, sa recunoastem, in fine, evidenta: exista numai trei posibilitati oneste, niciuna incantatoare: 1) sa acceptam teoria lui Darwin, renuntand la Dumnezeul Bibliei si adoptand deschis deismul, agnosticismul sau de-a dreptul ateismul; lumea va risca, insa, sa devina lipsita de „sens” si de providenta; 2) sa-l pastram pe Dumnezeu pe tronul lui, adoptand, in contra tuturor dovezilor stiintifice, o varianta de creationism; 3) sa fim inconsecventi, „duplicitari”, dar atunci s-o facem macar explicit si deschis. Probabil ca, in acest caz, vom pierde pacea unui crez unitar si vom avea parte de framantari si disperari, ca sa nu mai vorbim de reprosuri. Cititorul sa aleaga. Dar macar sa aleaga lucid si onest, fara a incerca sa nege si sa ascunda drama prin diferite subterfugii tactice si terminologice. Caci chiar si „duplicitatea” la care ma refeream, cu conditia de a fi recunoscuta, are nobletea ei existentiala si e preferabila tratarii opozitiei dintre darwinism si religie drept „o falsa problema”!

UNIVERSITY OF VALENCIA, 12-13 JANUARY 2009Call for papers
This call for papers is addressed to graduate students and doctors in philosophy who finished their PhDs during the last 3 years.
All submitted papers must be in English, Catalan or Spanish; and must be on philosophical issues. However there will be no further restrictions as regards topics or areas in philosophy. Accepted papers will be presented at the workshop (45 minutes) followed by a commentary (15 minutes) and an open discussion (30 minutes). There are two ways of participating in the workshop, as a speaker or as a commentator.
CONTRIBUTED PAPERS
Authors should send their papers or, alternatively, a summary in between 1000 and 1500 words (where the thesis defended and the arguments backing them up should be clearly stated) to tif_2009@yahoo.com. Papers and summaries should be arranged for blind refereeing. On a separate sheet of paper the authors will include their full name, e-mail address, title of their contribution and university or institution to which they belong. The selection will be carried out by the members of our scientific committee.
COMMENTATORS
Those interested in participating as commentators should send their data (name, e-mail address, institution and a short CV) to tif_2009@yahoo.com. A description of the main areas of philosophy they are interested in will also be required.
DEADLINES
Submitted papers will be accepted until the 26th September 2008. The result of the selection process will be communicated to the authors before the 24th of October 2008. Speakers must send the final version of their papers before the 21th of November 2008.

The TIF XI is organized by Alejandro Fontcuberta and Sergi Rosell, and supported by Phrónesis – Analytic Philosophy Group, with the collaboration of Càtedra Josep Lluís Blasco de Filosofia i Ciutadania of the Universitat de València.

International Conference in Philosophy @ Bucharest
The Philosophy Department of the University of Bucharest has a call for papers for the international conference „Reason in the contemporary public space” (Bucharest, November 14-15, 2008). The previous editions of the BICAP were fun (at least, I heard so).
